Hi! Welcome to my blog. My name is Salma Nakhuda, and I just joined the team at International Rivers as intern for the 2009 International Day of Action for Rivers. I am excited to have joined this movement and look forward to hearing about all of your events for the Day of Action for Rivers on March 14th. I hope to serve as the unifying force for actions around the globe.

I am a recent graduate of UC Berkeley, where I majored in Development Studies. In my studies, I examined the relationship between developed and "underdeveloped" regions of the world, relations of inequality and the distribution of resources, as well as political, economic and social conditions that create and come out of them. My understanding of these processes and my commitment to inspiring a positive change attracted me to International Rivers.

Although I have spent most of my life in California, I trace my roots back to South Asia; I was born in Mumbai, India and much of my family is originally from Gujurat. Thus, I feel a connection to the movements there, and am particularly fascinated by the numerous struggles of Indians and other South Asians. For instance I was inspired by the strength of the twelve thousand dam affected people marching in solidarity for the Day of Action for Rivers last year, and by the spirit of the kite flying at a riverside meeting. We look forward to hearing about all of the exciting events you have planned. So, I urge you to take action, let me know if you are planning an event, and don't forget to take lots of pictures!
