As the International Day of Action for Rivers approaches, more groups from around the world are joining our movement in support of rivers and have planned actions. Some of these organizations are from countries that are first time participants.

Friends of the Earth Middle East has taken their first step in participating in the International Day of Action for Rivers by issuing a press release calling upon their governments to meet their commitments to rehabilitate the Lower Jordan River.

The Lower East Side Girl's Club of New York has decided to take part by joining with their sister club, San Cristobal de las Casas, in Chiapas, Mexico to travel down the Usumacinta River to Yaxchilan. The Usumacinta River has been threatened by a hydroelectric dam that the Mexican government has proposed and withdrawn several times.

Activists and volunteers will be campaigning in Brisbane, Australia in an attempt to change the course of state politics. They aim to stop the building of a dam and save the Mary River. Campaign activities will include pamphlet distribution, marginal seat letterbox drops, a rally and sidewalk campaigning. Citizens are encouraged to show support by writing a letter, signing a petition, putting up a sign or attending a rally.

Stay tuned for updates on the planned actions, as well as news of more events. It's not too late to participate by attending an event in your region or organizing one of your own. And if you're near Berkeley, California, International Rivers invites you to attend our film screening on Friday March 13th.
