Happy Valentine's Day! Show your river some love by planning or participating in an action for the 2012 International Day of Action for Rivers, on March 14th.

The theme echoing around the world this year's International Day of Action for Rivers is "Keep Our Rivers Free!"

We already know of more than 20 actions planned in 16 countries!

A few of these exciting plans include:

  • The Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) will begin a campaign against the Bhasha Dam on the Indus River on March 14th.
  • The Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB) in Brazil is bringing together a wide range of social movements and communities for their many events, which will focus on protesting corporate control of river resources.
  • At the 6th Alternative World Water Forum in Marseille, France, activists will hold a demonstration in protest of dam greenwashing by governments and corporations.

Check out the actions planned for 2012 so far, and learn about events as they come in.

Looking for ideas? Here are just a few:

  • Send your message to Marseille! Take a picture next to your river, holding a sign that reads, "Keep the [Your River's Name] Free!" or another creative message that we will send with our staff to the Alternative World Water Forum.
  • Organize a river clean-up day, kayaking event, ceremony or community bike ride along a river.
  • Take to the streets and protest a destructive project threatening a river you love, or hold an event to educate your community about the dangers.

Whatever you choose to do, please let us know your plans, and send us your photos, videos, and stories! We are collecting information about all actions, and every one counts.

"Keep Our Rivers Free!" means that we want to keep them free-flowing, free from pollution, free from privatization, and free from greenwashing.

Email dayofaction@internationalrivers.org to let us know what you're planning, and/or if you'd like International Rivers to send you some materials for the event.
